HISTORY OF VIETNAM

Vietnam has been the battle scene for multiple wars and conflicts. Even though Vietnam is a relatively new country, it has the longest written history of all the nations in South East Asia, stretching back more than 2000 years in time. Here is a short summarize:

207 B.C Zhao Tuo founds the stae “Nam Viet”.

111 B.C

The Han dynasty conquers the Nam Viet state and the area remains Chinese for almost 1000 years.

938 A.D The Chinese are defeated at the battle by the Dang River.

1226-1440 The country is ruled under the Trang Dynasty.

1257-87 The Mongols attempt to invade the country several times.

1407-1426 The Chinese occupy the country again.

1592-1786 The Trinh family rules the country from Hanoi.

1620-1777 The Nguyen family independently rules the southern part of the country.

1771-1802 The Toy Son uprisings shake the country (and spreads anarchy).

1802-1883 The Nguyen family unites the country.

1858-1897 French colonial forces occupy Vietnam and its neighbours and form the colony “Indochina”.

1930 Uprising against the French, provoked by Nguyen Ai Quoc (later known as Ho Chi Minh), leader of the newly formed Indochina communist party. The uprising is brutally silenced by the French colonial forces, and Nguyen forced to flee.

1940 The Japanese take control over Indochina, and first uses the colony as a vassal state, but later takes total control over the colony.

1945 The August revolution. The communist freedom movement, Viet Minh takes control over Indochina. During World War Two the Viet Minh was sponsored by USA with education in warfare and weapons to be used against the Japanese. British troops maintain law and order with help of Japanese soldiers that had surrendered.

1946 The French want to retake control over their colony. A war breaks out between the Viet Minh and the French.

1949 The pro- French state of Vietnam is founded by Bảo Šại.

1954 The French loose the battle of Dien Bien Phu, witch leads to an end of the French control over Indochina and the country of Vietnam is divided into north and south. Free voting is to be held over if the country is to unite, but the voting never takes place.

1955 The republic of South Vietnam is ruled by the anti-communist (dictator) president Ngo Dinh Diem.

1960 The FNL (Front National Liberation) resistance is founded in South Vietnam. The US now starts to sponsor the republic of South Vietnam with weapons and military advisors.

1963 A CIA approved Coup D´etat is carried out by ARVN (south Vietnamese army) General, Tran Van Minh. Diem is killed in the Coup. The Coup is followed by a series of power exchanges.

1964 ARVN general Nguyen Khan (considered by the US as ARVNS best officer) takes control over South Vietnam. Officially Khanh resigns, but continues to rule in the shadows.

1965 Viet Cong (FNL) takes control over large parts of the country side and South Vietnam is in a frazzle. American troops arrive to the country to support South Vietnam.

1968 The communist drive through the “TET” offensive, where many South Vietnamese cities and ARVN and US military compounds are attacked. The result is great losses for North Vietnam and the FNL, but a big psychological set back for the US, whom reduces its troops in country.

1970 The US invades Cambodia in an attempt to cut of the FNLs supply chain.

1972 Easter offensive. The army of North Vietnam drives through a full scale invasion with at least 3 divisions backed up by artillery and armoured units. After 4 months of battle, ended at the battle of An Loc, were South Vietnam manages to make a stand, the North Vietnamese forces abort the invasion.

1973

Peace treaties speed up in Paris after North Vietnams failed invasion. The US returns all responsibility to South Vietnam and all US forces, except for a few advisors are taken home. While South Vietnam is getting lesser and lesser equipment from the US, North Vietnam with the help of China and the Soviet Union builds a huge army.

1975

The army of North Vietnam and the FNL defeats South Vietnam in a grim and merciless offensive.
