The Thompson sub machine gun
is a well made weapon of high quality that was manufactured from
before World War Two under the name Thompson 1921. All the earlier
models had a grip in the forth, under the barrel. There was also a
civilian model with a longer barrel and semi automatic only.
On the next model, the
Thompson 1928 a flash hider was introduced. This version was
available both with a grip in the forth or just a smooth straight
hand guard.
The M1928A1 was a simpler
version of the M1928, with more simple sight and most commonly
manufactured without the forward grip.
During World War Two it was
shown that the production of the Thompson M1928 was too time
demanding and most of all – too expensive. Therefore, in 1942 the
weapon was once again simplified and the new models – the Thompson
M1 and M1A1 were introduced. Even though the changes it was still
considered to bee too expensive and time demanding and therefore,
production of the M3 “Grease Gun” was prioritized.
This well made American
Thompson sub machine gun found it’s way to Indochina in smaller
quantities were it was used mainly in the beginning of the war, even
though some units used it the entire war through.
